BridDort Water Works C^irDsny wholly nr partly
suDDlies the Parishes of Litton Cheney, Burton Bradstock,
Bradpole, Walditch, Bo thenharruton and Syrrondsbury with water
•which is Satisfactory in duality but not always in nuantity.
This Water has been co-ntinuouslv chlorinated ^ince 19^0, exceutlne
the Walditch i^-jinply, ""he Charwouth sunuly , jiT/rnod by the
Rural District Council, is oerived froin five shallow sources,
vicldins: aDuroxir-a tely Gallons per day. This supply is
also continuously chlorinated. The reraining Parishes are either
v'ithout piped supplies or are partly supplied with piped water
cy private suppli era , and they are not of adequate ca.pacity for
U'.'c ^s permanent public supplies. Under the Rural Water Supplies
a'lc ^iw-’vrjge Act 19-^^-, obligation is placed on every Local
A'.ithority to provide a supply of wholesoire water in pipes to every
rural locality in those districts in which there are houses or
sohooDs, provided tnpt it is practicable and at a reasonable cost
(tne latter to be aecided oy tne Minister).
30 sarrples were taken for Dabt er iological analysis,
incluQing I4 froin Gnarmouth, all tne latter being very satisfactory
except one. Tne samples from tne Bridport Water Company's supply
were also Vtry satisfactory.
Sewefage,
The drainage in the district is very unsat isf actory as,
aPai’t from those areas immediately adjacent to Bridport Borough,
the re'iialnder of the villages on a water carriage svstem
discharne all the crude sewage int'^ the nearest water course, with
the result that all the latter are verv e^rossly polluted. This is
especi^llv at Charmouth, Chideock, Bradpole and Burton Bradstook.
